Matthew Shoaf

Matthew Shoaf is an accomplished musician and teacher with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music with Emphasis on Guitar from the University of Missouri Kansas City. Early on he studied at the Roger’s Foundation of Music. At school he studied guitar with Douglas Niedt, played in many Jazz Ensembles including the Roo Band under John Liesenring, the UMKC Jazz Band/Orchestra under Mike Parkinson and Hal Melia, and many combos. He also sang with the University Singers under Charles Robinson at UMKC.

Since then he has gone on to travel, play, and record, all across the United States with numerous local and national acts along the way. His cover band, Gov’t Cheez held a weekly residence on The Country Club Plaza for over fourteen years. With a wide repertoire consisting of roots rock, reggae, funk, R&B, blues, soul, jazz, and classical music, you are sure to hear something you like.

His current projects include Flannigan’s Right Hook (Celtic Rock band), Patrick Lentz Band, KCFLO, Diamond Empire Band, and also many solo guitar/vocal performances, all happening several nights weekly all around the Kansas City area and midwest. With over 20 solid years of experience teaching each student individually, he has achieved great success with his method and seen many students go on to be professionals themselves. He is fluent in most guitar styles and methods and will tailor the instruction to the individual.
