Sara Gustafson

Sarah Gustafson believes that music and martial arts are closely related. She has experience as a cello teacher at MAI and as a Krav Maga instructor at Self-Defense Global. Sarah's passion for music began early on due to her mother's influence as a musician. Although she didn't enjoy playing the piano, she recognized its significance as the foundation of all music, especially for the cello, her favorite instrument. Sarah's interest in martial arts stemmed from a personal safety concern after almost being carjacked. Krav Maga helped her address this issue effectively, as it is a technique taught to military and law enforcement personnel worldwide.

Sarah didn't anticipate becoming a martial artist in her younger years, but she acknowledges the impact her musical background has had on her physical activities. Both musicians and martial artists require high levels of self-discipline. Sarah's musical journey began in middle school, where she was the first chair cellist, and continued through Truman High School, where she participated in the school orchestra. She pursued her love for music at Graceland University, majoring in Music Performance and Studio Art. During high school, she had the opportunity to study with Jack Ergo and played in the Kansas City Youth Symphony. Sarah occasionally performs at gigs and has also played with the St. Joseph Symphony.

Above all, Sarah's true passion lies in teaching. She derives immense joy from watching her students grow and particularly enjoys working with ensembles. She hopes to establish a string quartet in the future. Teaching is not just a job for Sarah; it is her way of life. She appreciates MAI for allowing her to focus on her students and their families, as she finds fulfillment in working not only with the students but also with their parents.
